About UPC-A
UPC-A (Universal Product Code) is the 12-digit barcode standard used in North American retail. It is essentially an EAN-13 barcode with a leading zero suppressed. If you have a 13-digit EAN starting with 0, removing that leading zero gives you the UPC-A equivalent. Both formats can be scanned by US retail POS systems.

What is the difference between UPC-A and EAN-13?
UPC-A has 12 digits and EAN-13 has 13. A UPC-A code is in fact an EAN-13 with a leading zero, so every modern retail scanner reads both. UPC-A dominates in the United States and Canada; EAN-13 is used everywhere else.
How many digits does a UPC-A barcode have?
Twelve: a one-digit number system, a five-digit manufacturer code, a five-digit product code and a check digit. The check digit uses the same mod-10 scheme as EAN-13, with weights alternating 3 and 1 from the leftmost digit.
